Canadian businesses are grappling with significant challenges stemming from U.S. President Donald Trump's imposition of tariffs.

 

These measures have introduced economic uncertainty, disrupted supply chains, and strained the historically robust trade relationship between Canada and the United States.

 

That uncertainty has been compared to what many businesses felt when the pandemic virtually shut down the economy, creating chaos and confusion.

 

To assist the local business community as they did then, the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce and Greater Kitchener Waterloo Chamber of Commerce have relaunched their Ask the Expert initiative to share information and resources.

 

Held online every Thursday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., Ask the Expert provides business operators the opportunity to discuss their concerns, as well as hear the latest news and insights from a variety of professionals surrounding the issues related to this escalating trade war, including federal aid programs.

 

Global growth slowdown

 

Among those who recently shared their knowledge was Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association (APMA) CEO Flavio Volpe who discussed, among other things, the impact tariffs will have on auto industry on both sides of the border. 

 

“It almost feels a little bit like we are in the early days of the pandemic when business owners we’re just trying to understand what was happening,” says Cambridge Chamber President and CEO Greg Durocher, describing the uncertainty currently being felt by business owners.

 

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has highlighted the detrimental impact of these tariffs on the global economy, with particular emphasis on Canada.

 

The OECD forecasts a slowdown in global growth to 3.1% in 2025 and 3.0% in 2026, attributing this deceleration partly to the trade tensions initiated by the U.S. Specifically, Canada's economic growth is projected to decline to 0.7% in 2025, a significant reduction that underscores the profound effect of the tariffs on the nation's economic trajectory.

 

Eroded business confidence

 

The unpredictability associated with the on-again, off-again nature of the tariffs has eroded business confidence.

 

The latest CEO Confidence Index from Chief Executive magazine indicates a significant drop, reaching the lowest level since November 2012. This decline is attributed to the fluctuating tariff policies between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, which have made long-term planning and investment decisions increasingly challenging for businesses.

 

Executives from major financial institutions have voiced concerns about the negative impact of this uncertainty on business operations and economic stability. 

 

Greg says that uncertainty is clear, noting many of those logging on to Ask the Expert are smaller business owners who may not be directly impacted by tariffs but more from the trickle-down effects of a prolonged trade war.

 

“Nobody really knows yet what those impacts will be,” he says. “The people joining us really want to know more about timing and when things are going to happen. I think some of the concerns are morphing away from talk of annexation and are now touching on the realization that there is something really wrong in the U.S.”

Federal aid package info

 

In response to U.S. tariff impositions that have disrupted trade and heightened economic uncertainty, the Canadian government has introduced a comprehensive aid package exceeding $6 billion to support affected businesses. The key components of this financial assistance include:

 

1. Trade Impact Program by Export Development Canada (EDC):

With its newly launched Trade Impact Program, EDC is prepared to facilitate an additional $5 billion over two years in support. This program aims to:

• Market Diversification: Assist exporters in identifying and penetrating new international markets, reducing reliance on the U.S. market.

• Risk Mitigation: Provide solutions to manage challenges such as non-payment risks, currency fluctuations, and cash flow constraints.

• Expansion Support: Offer financial backing to overcome barriers hindering business growth and international expansion.

These measures are designed to help companies navigate the economic challenges posed by the tariffs and adapt to the evolving trade environment.

2. Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) Financing:

To support businesses directly affected by the tariffs, the BDC is providing $500 million in favorably priced loans. Key features include:

• Loan Amounts: Businesses can access loans ranging from $100,000 to $2 million.

• Flexible Terms: Loans come with favorable interest rates and flexible repayment options, including the possibility of deferring principal payments for up to 12 months.

• Advisory Services: Beyond financing, BDC offers advisory services in areas such as financial management and market diversification to strengthen business resilience.

This initiative aims to provide immediate financial relief and support long-term strategic planning for affected businesses. 

 

3. Farm Credit Canada (FCC) Support for Agriculture and Food Industry:

Recognizing the unique challenges faced by the agriculture and food sectors, the government has allocated $1 billion in new financing through FCC. This support includes:

• Additional Credit Lines: Access to an additional credit line of up to $500,000 for eligible businesses.

• New Term Loans: Provision of new term loans to address specific financial needs arising from the tariffs.

• Payment Deferrals: Current FCC customers have the option to defer principal payments on existing loans for up to 12 months.

These measures are intended to alleviate cash flow challenges, allowing businesses to adjust to the new operating environment and continue supplying high-quality agricultural and food products. 

 

4. Enhancements to the Employment Insurance (EI) Work-Sharing Program:

To mitigate layoffs and retain skilled workers, the government has introduced temporary flexibilities to the EI Work-Sharing Program:

• Extended Duration: The maximum duration of work-sharing agreements has been extended from 38 weeks to 76 weeks.

• Increased Access: Adjustments have been made to make the program more accessible to businesses experiencing a downturn due to the tariffs.

This program allows employees to work reduced hours while receiving EI benefits, helping employers retain experienced staff and enabling workers to maintain their employment and skills during periods of reduced business activity. 

 

5. Strengthening Investment Protections:

To safeguard Canadian businesses from potentially harmful foreign takeovers during this period of economic vulnerability, the government has updated the Investment Canada Act Guidelines. While Canada continues to welcome foreign investment, these updates ensure that any investments posing risks to economic security can be thoroughly reviewed and addressed.

The high cost of living, inflation, housing affordability, and rising operational costs top the lists of concerns for Ontario businesses, according to the Ontario Chamber of Commerce’s (OCC) most recent Ontario Economic Report (OER)

 

The report shows a significant rise in business confidence over the course of 2024, climbing from a historic low of 13% to 26% by year’s end. Despite this improvement, confidence remains historically low and fragile, with 48% of businesses expressing a lack of confidence in the economy. Affordability and the cost of living continue to be the most pressing concerns for businesses.

 

The survey, conducted between October 15 and December 2, 2024, gathered insights from 1,714 respondents representing a diverse range of industries, regions, and organizations.

 

The results show that when U.S. tariff threats are on the table, business confidence drops dramatically to just 15%, almost erasing the last year’s gains, according to the OCC’s separate tariff survey in early February. This recent research also shows that with tariffs in play, six in ten (60%) business decision makers would lack confidence in Ontario’s economic outlook.

 

“I may not use the word fragile describing the confidence level and instead use the word tempered,” says Cambridge Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Greg Durocher. “People's optimism for the future of business in the short term is tempered by the impact of Trump’s tariffs. I think most people in business realize that the impact of any decision is probably going to be short term. Whether or not tariffs are long term isn't the issue, it’s the impact of tariffs. So, after a period time, the marketplace settles down and people get used to whatever is the new reality.”

 

Ontario’s economic outlook varies

 

Confidence in Ontario’s economic outlook varies significantly across industries, with the information and cultural industries sector reporting the lowest level of optimism at just 17%.  Businesses in this sector cite high operational costs, shifting consumer behaviour, declining advertising revenues, and mounting pressures from technological disruption, global competition, and regulatory challenges as key drivers of their pessimism.

 

The retail (18%), non-profit (20%), utilities (21%), and accommodation and food services (22%) sectors follow closely, reflecting the impact of declining consumer spending amid heightened cost-of-living pressures.

 

The agriculture sector, while showing a slight improvement over last year, also remains among the least confident sectors (22%). Concerns in this sector centre on extreme weather events, trade and supply chain barriers, and growing labour gaps and succession planning challenges as a significant portion of the workforce approaches retirement.

 

By contrast, confidence is strongest in the mining (56%), finance and insurance (40%), and administrative and waste management services (40%) sectors. This could be explained by the strong demand for critical minerals supported by Ontario’s Critical Minerals Strategy, rising sustainability initiatives the finance sector’s ongoing resilience, and growth driven by fintech advancements. These sectors demonstrate adaptability and the ability to capitalize on emerging opportunities.

 

Survey respondents remain optimistic

 

Regionally, most of Ontario’s regions outside the GTA saw a significant reduction in confidence compared to the previous year.

 

Confidence is lowest in Stratford-Bruce Peninsula (19%), Northeast Ontario (21%), and the Greater Ottawa Area (21%), where in addition to concerns surrounding high costs and housing affordability, businesses are disproportionately sensitive to government policies and investments and have suffered more extreme weather events than other regions.

 

Confidence is highest in the Greater London Area (34%), a significant rebound from last year (9%). This resurgence is likely fueled by strong consumer demand, and domestic manufacturing capacity and supply chains, including the announcement of the Volkswagen EV battery plant in St. Thomas.

 

Despite the challenges, respondents report relative optimism about their own business growth prospects. Nearly half (49%) express confidence in their own future, citing factors such as strong consumer demand, innovation, and improved inflation management, something that doesn’t surprise Greg.

 

“I think that you'll find that there's going to be a growth and optimism because many sectors in Canada are going to strengthen as a result,” he says. “We’ve never been the ‘buy Canadian’ kind of a nation and the U.S. has always had buy American programs in place because we’ve always understood we were a player in the global market.”

 

He says there are initiatives created by the Provincial and Federal governments to encourage Canadian businesses to look at other, more reliable markets, rather than depending on the American market.

 

European Union agreement key

 

“Why we perceive the U.S. market to be unreliable right now is because anything that the American government does that impacts the trade with their nation is exponential in our case because 80 per cent of our GDP goes to the United States,” says Greg. “So, we're vulnerable to every whim of the U.S. government. For us to get more reliable sources, we need to diversify so we need to have relationships in the European Union.”

 

He notes the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, which Canada signed in the fall of 2016, has been underutilized. 

 

“I think it stands to reason that we have not served ourselves well by not really looking seriously at the European Union for economic trade,” says Greg, noting this happened primarily because of our expectation the U.S. would always remain a reliable trading partner.

 

“We need to understand what the reality of this is going to be going forward and whether we do get aggressive when it comes to find other trading partners.  And if Canadians continue to buy Canadian that will really impact the U.S. exponentially because we do consume a lot of American products.”

Report highlights: 

 

  • Business confidence in Ontario’s economy has doubled in the past year, rising from 13% to 26%, but a majority of respondents (48%) lack confidence in the economy. 
  • High costs remain the top concern for businesses, with 78% citing the cost of living, followed by inflation (62%), housing affordability (57%), and rising operational costs (51%).
  • Simplifying or reducing business taxes (42%) is the most frequently cited policy solution to improve economic conditions, followed by affordable housing (32%), health system capacity (30%) and workforce development to solve labour shortages (29%).
  • While businesses recognize the economic importance of technology adoption, environmental sustainability, diversity and inclusion and Indigenous reconciliation, businesses report a need for support and guidance in seizing these opportunities.
  • Businesses report being ill-equipped to support workers and communities through mental health and addictions challenges. For example, while 71% of businesses recognize the importance of mental health and well-being to their success, only 41% have formal mental health strategies.
  • Business leaders are confident in their ability to adapt to ongoing trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada with nearly half (48%) reporting confidence, while 32% are neutral and only 15% expressing a lack of confidence. 
  • Ontario’s post-pandemic recovery faces significant headwinds, including potential U.S. tariff threats, geopolitical instability, lagging productivity, affordability challenges, and rising unemployment.

While the recent 30-day postponement of U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs and Canada’s retaliatory measures came as welcomed news to businesses, the lingering presence of these threats remain prompting the Chamber network to act using a variety of tactics, including advocacy, negotiation, education and promoting partnerships.

 

Trump’s demand for 25 per cent blanket tariffs on all Canadian goods, with the exception of a 10 per cent tariff on Canadian energy, and Canada’s proposed retaliatory tariffs on $155 billion of U.S. goods, has sent economic shockwaves through both nations prompting calls for action on both sides of the border.

 

To clearly map out the vital importance of the trading relationship between the two countries and the risks businesses face, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce’s Business Data Lab has introduced the Canada-U.S. Trade Tracker —a new tool designed to illustrate the ties between the two economies. It notes that $3.6 billion in goods crosses the Canada-U.S. border daily, generating a $1.3 trillion annual trade relationship.

 

"A 30-day delay means more time for Canadian businesses and governments to drive home the point that tariffs make no sense between the two closest allies the world has ever known,” said Candace Laing, President and CEO, Canadian Chamber of Commerce, in a release. “The Canadian Chamber, our network and businesses across the country will spend every day of it fighting hard to secure this historic, robust trading relationship. Raising the cost of living for Americans and Canadians with these taxes is the wrong move. Canada and the U.S. make things together, and we should in fact be building on that.”

 

 

Call to dismantle interprovincial trade barriers

 

It is a sentiment echoed by her colleagues at the Ontario Chamber of Commerce who have rallied their members, which includes the Cambridge Chamber, in a show of unity and strength and targeted actions including supporting a unified call for Canadian premiers to quickly dismantle interprovincial trade barriers and the creation of a business and trade leadership coalition.

 

Called the Ontario Business & Trade Leadership Coalition (OBTLC), it aims to unit leaders from key trade-dependent sectors to champion business-driven solutions, advocate for effective government policies, and solidify Ontario’s position as a global leader in trade.

 

“President Trump has claimed the U.S. doesn’t need Canada – but we are here to show just how invaluable we are. Ontario businesses are stepping up to safeguard our economy and reinforce our global competitiveness,” said Daniel Tisch, President and CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, in a release. “The Ontario Business & Trade Leadership Coalition represents a united response – a coalition of industry leaders committed to resilience, collaboration, and growth.”

 

BestWR brings business groups together

 

But the fight to ward off economic turmoil caused by these tariff threats has also been ramped up locally, says Cambridge Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Greg Durocher, through the revival of a unique partnership created during the pandemic to assist businesses.

 

“We created the Business Economic Support Team of Waterloo Region (BestWR) during COIVD-19 consisting of organizations that are fundamentally engaged in the economic activities through business in the region and have brought it back as a support mechanism for local businesses with respect to trade,” he explains. “It was created during the pandemic, but this is now really about a united force of business organizations helping local businesses navigate these turbulent trade waters.”

 

Besides the Cambridge and Greater Kitchener Waterloo Chambers, BestWR also includes Waterloo EDC, Communitech and Explore Waterloo Region.

 

“We are engaged right now with regional municipalities to create opportunities whereby we can offer a support role in helping local businesses find local or Canadian suppliers, or to expose local businesses to the products they currently manufacture or sell and may be able to find Canadian customers for,” says Greg, noting BestWR also has strong federal and provincial connections which they will use to assist businesses.

 

“We have the insight to be able to tap into key levers within provincial government and within the federal government to have input on what potential supports those governments may need to provide businesses to keep them moving through this turmoil.”

 

Ask the Expert returns

 

As a further measure to assist, both the Cambridge and KW Chambers have revived their online tool 'Ask the Expert'.

 

These weekly Zoom calls - created during the pandemic to provide business leaders with current information – will now provide an opportunity for manufacturers and businesses in the region who export to the U.S. to ask questions.

 

“We will invite various experts to take part in the one-hour call, and hopefully get some answers to their questions and help them keep their business humming along and doing the things they need to do to support their employees,” says Greg.

 

'Ask the Expert' will take place every Thursday, between 9-10 a.m.

 

“This all about businesses,” he says. “And how do we navigate the turbulent challenges ahead and make it a win for Canadian businesses.”

 

The Chambers have also revamped the chambercheck website (which offered timely resources for businesses during the pandemic) to provide a growing list of trade-related resources to inform and assist businesses.

 

 

Reasons for businesses to remain confident and optimistic:

 

Economic Resilience

Canadian businesses have demonstrated remarkable resilience in the face of past economic challenges. Our diverse economy and strong trade relationships beyond the United States provide a buffer against potential disruptions.

 

United Response

The Canadian government, provincial leaders, and business organizations like your local Chamber of Commerce are presenting a united front in response to this threat. This co-ordinated approach strengthens our negotiating position and demonstrates our commitment to protecting Canadian interests.

 

Potential for Internal Growth

For years the Chamber network has been encouraging the government of Canada to remove interprovincial trade barriers and unlock the economic prosperity lying dormant in these archaic policies. This situation presents an opportunity to address long-standing interprovincial trade barriers and by removing them boost Canada's economy by up to $200 billion per year, potentially offsetting the impact of U.S. tariffs.

 

Mutual Economic Interests

It's important to remember that the proposed tariffs would also significantly harm the U.S. economy. American businesses and consumers would face higher costs and reduced competitiveness, which could lead to pressure on the U.S. administration to reconsider this approach. 

 

Time for Preparation

With the proposed tariffs not set to take effect until at least March 1, there is time for diplomatic efforts and for businesses to prepare contingency plans as we work our business contacts and channels to influence key stakeholders in the U.S.

 

Leveraging Canadian Assets

Canada continues to highlight its valuable assets that are strategically important to the U.S., including:

 

  • Energy resources
  • Critical minerals
  • Nuclear power capabilities
  • AI research excellence
  • Lumber and building materials
  • Automotive
  • Agriculture

By emphasizing these assets, Canada is demonstrating that doing business with us is not just beneficial but strategically smarter than alternatives.

 

Government Support

The Canadian government has a track record of supporting businesses during trade disputes. We can expect measures to be put in place to assist affected industries if the tariffs are implemented.

The holiday season is an important time to boost the bottom line for retail businesses.

 

But just how much consumers are spending this year is hard to pin down, says Brad Davis, a retired Associate Professor at Wilfrid Laurier University’s Lazaridis School of Business and Economics, who specializes in consumer behaviour and trends.

 

According to the Retail Council of Canada (RCC) and Leger, this year average holiday spending was expected to be around $972, which is up $74 or eight per cent from the 2023 holiday season. Meanwhile, PwC Canada says Canadian consumers were planning to spend an average of $1,853 on gifts, travel, and entertainment this holiday season, a 13% increase over last year.

 

Shoppers, it seems, are adopting more strategic behaviours when it comes to gift giving. With inflation still impacting prices, an Angus Reid Group study indicates that 71% of Canadians are budgeting carefully, seeking promotions, and comparing options extensively.

 

Black Friday and Cyber Week have remained key shopping periods, with many delaying purchases to capitalize on discounts.

 

“The last few years I've taught I've been kind of really disparaging about spending surveys and I think you see so many of them where the results say one thing and then the actual behaviour is totally different,” says Brad. “I think we've created this environment where there's kind of a disconnect between immediate gratification of purchase and then the actual feeling of having spent money you don't see until the credit card bill arrives.”

 

That same Angus Reid Group survey, conducted from Oct. 15-21 from among approximately 1,500 Canadians 18 and older, also indicates at least 46% of holiday shoppers were planning to spend less this year. 

 

Sustainability and quality key factors

 

Sustainability and quality are also playing a significant role in purchasing decisions this year. Shoppers increasingly prefer high-quality, longer-lasting items and even second-hand products. For retailers, offering compelling loyalty programs and promoting ethical practices could further attract this value-driven demographic.​

 

Brad says while the holiday shopping season is an important time for many businesses, planning for the long term has also become a priority.

 

“You’ve got the sales now and the cash flow, but there is so much stuff going on with artificial intelligence and the relationship between online and bricks and mortar stores,” he says. “There’s that balance between being very reactive to what’s happening now and not compromising what you’re going to have to do for that long-term adjustment to current changes. I think many are still dealing with kind of a post-COVID restructuring.”

 

According to the Angus Reid Group, 26% of Canadians were planning to do most of their holiday shopping in-store this year, while 34% will do the majority online. With half (48%) of small businesses finding it harder to compete with the rise of online giants.

 

Survey results show Ontarians are leading nationwide in online shopping, with 41% of their holiday budget spent digitally, balancing this with the tactile experience of in-store shopping​, something Brad says is hard to define for many retailers.

 

“Every retail space has presumably different consumer experience expectations,” he says, adding the term ‘customer experience’ is the mantra retail experts often tout. “But when you have so much traditional retail stuff or a customer experience which is designed to create that kind of more spontaneous or in-store decision making, how do you balance that with online?”

 

By focusing on value, engaging promotions, and omnichannel excellence, experts say Ontario retailers and businesses should be maximizing their potential this holiday season.

 

Some key spending drivers this holiday season:

 

Consumer spending growth: Rising disposable incomes, particularly among millennials and Gen Z, are fueling higher expenditure on gifts, travel, and entertainment​.

 

Preference for online shopping: Retailers with robust digital platforms and promotions, especially during key events like Black Friday and Cyber Week, are poised for success​.

 

In-store experience matters: While online shopping grows, 62% of Canadians still value the tactile experience of in-store shopping. For Ontario retailers, curating an engaging, festive in-store atmosphere could capture the attention of consumers seeking the traditional holiday shopping experience​.

 

Strategic shopping and sustainability: Items like clothing, home essentials, and gift cards dominate wish lists. Retailers offering eco-friendly options or emphasizing value-driven strategies are likely to resonate with shoppers​.

 

Impact of promotions and loyalty programs: Businesses offering early deals, compelling promotions, and customer-centric loyalty programs will stand out during this competitive season​.

 

Challenges facing Ontario businesses:

 

Economic uncertainty: While economic indicators are improving, the lingering effects of inflation mean that consumers remain cautious. Retailers need to balance pricing strategies carefully to attract budget-conscious shoppers without eroding profit margins​.

 

Supply chain and inventory management: Ensuring adequate inventory while avoiding overstock is critical. Supply chain disruptions seen in previous years underline the importance of proactive planning​.

Small businesses are the cornerstone of Canada’s economy and communities.

 

Defined as businesses with fewer than 100 employees, small businesses make up about 98% of all businesses in Canada. This sector employs nearly 70% of the private workforce, highlighting its significance in providing employment opportunities to millions of Canadians.

 

Approximately 70% of the workforce in Cambridge is employed by small businesses with less than 10 employees, according to the City of Cambridge website. But the impact of small businesses extends beyond mere job creation. They contribute significantly to Canada’s GDP, generating more than 30% of the total economic output. 

 

They also form the backbone of local communities, offering personalized services, creating local jobs, and supporting other local businesses by sourcing products and services from nearby suppliers. This interconnectedness strengthens local economies and builds a sense of community, as small business owners frequently engage in community events, sponsorships, and charitable activities.

 

Small businesses are community builders which is why in the October edition of our INSIGHT Magazine – coinciding with Small Business Month - we profile six local businesses and the people behind them, each of whom have followed different paths towards success. However, they do share one important characteristic necessary to become a successful entrepreneur and business owner: drive.

The Poop Valet – Pet Waste Removal Service – Rick & Sherry Couchman

 

What began as a ‘hobby’ born out of a serious need 18 months ago to find a sense of new purpose following years of dealing with mental health issues led Rich Couchman to create a niche company that continues to skyrocket towards success. With the assistance of his wife, Sherry, the couple have turned The Poop Valet into an award-winning enterprise that not only enhances the overall living conditions for pets and their owners, but also offers viable solutions for dog lovers facing physical challenges or senior pet owners living on their own and helps create a more environmentally healthier community.

The Poop Valet now operates from the couple’s Hespeler home with two trucks and serves approximately 80 clients weekly or biweekly, as well many one-time service calls. Also, the company is now working with land property management companies to install and service pet waste stations and collects approximately a ton and half of dog waste a month, which in partnership with another local business is disposed of at a local landfill.

As CEO of Roseview Global Incubator and one of its founding principals along with Mike Dearden and Melissa Durrell, Rob has the opportunity daily to make a difference thanks to the Cambridge company’s commitment to assisting international entrepreneurs pursue permanent residency in Canada through the Start-up Visa Program (SUV).

Created in 2020, Roseview Global Incubator is the latest in a long list of ventures for Rob who since the late 1970s has owned and operated several small businesses since obtaining his accountant designation.

He partnered with another local business leader, Carol Furtado, in 1998 to create Roseview Capital Consultants – the name ‘Roseview’ inspired by a street in which he once owned a house. Roseview Global Incubator’s approach relies on a self-paced, custom-tailored incubation and accelerator program that focuses on meeting the specific needs of each SUV applicant, as well as an extensive curriculum touching on topics that are important to new business operators in Canada, including tutelage on legal issues, budgeting, real estate, and government operations. 

As a result, Roseview has worked with a broad range of exciting entrepreneurs with businesses that extend from medtech to food import, to drone technology to education and everything in between.  

 

 

Jackman Construction Ltd. – Eric Jackman

 

Jackman Construction Ltd. is the ideal example of how thinking big can help a small business to grow and prosper.  What began as the brainchild of Eric Jackman in a Kitchener garage in 2011 as a small home-grown reno and drywall business has grown to become a leading firm that specializes in construction management, general contracting, renovation, and drywalI, now employing more than 60+ people that work collaboratively under multiple divisions. Innovation is important at Jackman Construction, which heavily relies on the expertise and experience of its staff to ensure excellent workmanship is provided to clients and their projects. Jackman Construction continues to undertake a wide variety of projects and clients. As well, Jackman Construction ensures it remains a good corporate citizen by supporting a variety of charitable endeavours, and causes, including the Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region, plus holiday toy and food drives. Valet Car Wash – Mike Black

 

Valet Car Wash owner Mike Black says a clean car was a must while he was growing up since his father was an executive at Chrysler Canada. However, transforming this passion into a viable business venture seemed like an almost insurmountable task when after five years of planning he opened Valet Car Wash in April of 1991 during a recession accompanied by sky-high interest rates. But he made it work. Located at the site of the former Sunset Drive-In, which closed in 1986, and encompassing 20,000 square feet, Valet Car Wash was the largest car wash facility in Canada when it opened.

The business offered a wide range of services and prices using the latest technology which has continually been adapted thanks to new advancements.

Being creative has been a top priority at Valet Car Wash in Cambridge and the implementation of its Standards of Excellence initiative is a prime example. This company-wide plan calls for employees to deliver exceptional customer service, and prioritizing hiring based on personality traits, character, and values which has created a supportive and welcoming workplace, one that celebrates its diverse workforce, valuing the opportunity to learn from each other's strengths and cultural perspectives. 

 

 

Weber Immigration – Olena Weber

 

Starting a new life in another country can be a daunting experience. But Olena Weber, who left behind her family and friends in the Ukraine to study abroad in Canada and later created a successful business, it was something she fully embraced. Thirteen years have passed since she first arrived and Olena has transformed her experiences into Weber Immigration, a successful Canadian-based firm that specializes in economic and family immigration programs to assist those seeking a new life in this country.

Olena credits her parents, now retired business owners, for inspiring her to become an entrepreneur. They had been in the fashion industry and owned several retail stores in Kyiv, which Olena says wasn’t easy due to the political situation. With a desire to take her business to another level, Olena became a registered immigration consultant in 2016.

She was joined by her husband, Cory, who also became a licensed immigration consultant in 2021 after stepping away from his work in the aerospace manufacturing sector. Building strong connections with clients is important to Olena and her team at Weber Immigration, which on its website refers to itself as a ‘boutique immigration firm’.

 

 

Cambridge Ford – Kevin Zimic

 

As a teenager living in Welland, Kevin Zimic can clearly recall standing outside the local GM dealership with his then high school sweetheart – now wife – dreaming of what the future could bring. He made that dream a reality and credits his time growing up in Welland for instilling the fortitude he needed to become a successful entrepreneur as owner of Cambridge Ford and a community champion.

His resilience proved invaluable during his time working for the Ford Motor Company where he held many positions in a 16-year period before deciding to leave the corporate world and follow a more entrepreneurial path.

Taking that first step, says Kevin, is the toughest part of becoming an entrepreneur and his resulted in the creation of an event marketing company that ran alumni fantasy hockey camps and later he shifted gears by obtaining the Canadian rights to sell a polyurethane lining system under the banner of Rhino Linings.

After buying into Ridgehill Ford (rebranded as Cambridge Ford following its move to a larger location on Eagle Street North at the end of the pandemic), Kevin strengthened ties to the community by serving as both the CMH Foundation Board Vice-Chair and as the co-chair of the very successful $10 million #WeCareCMH campaign when his family relocated here in 2014.

Summer is nearly here and the outlook for the local tourism sector is expected to be a hot one thanks to the continued interest of visitors seeking getaways that won’t break the bank.

 

“Our main market is leisure travel from the GTA and given current inflation, people are considering staying a little closer to home, perhaps to save a little money,” says Explore Waterloo Region CEO Michele Saran. “We feel we’re in a good position for those quick little getaways if you can’t afford a full-on trip somewhere overseas.”

 

In fact, while international travel numbers to Canada continue to slowly rebound according to Destination Canada, the domestic market has long since fully recovered following the pandemic.

 

“Research shows Canada is the top international destination for Americans and where they want to go in 2024,” says Michele, adding Waterloo Region is in a much better position than places that rely on international travel. “I’m hearing a lot of positivity from local operators, and everyone seems to be excited about the summer season; the only thing they’re wishing for is good weather.”

 

Tourism in Waterloo Region contributes approximately $557 million annually to the local economy, and it’s a sector that takes in more than just leisure travel.

 

“When we’re talking about tourism it’s not just about leisure visitation. It’s also about business events and conventions, as well as sporting events,” says Michele, pointing to the 2024 Special Olympics Ontario Spring Games (May 23-26) in Waterloo Region as a prime example and the fact more than 700 athletes and their families would be in the area.

 

Economic impact

 

On the business side, she says the region has secured $49.5 million in economic impact last year for business events in the coming years. 

 

“Tourism is big business,” says Michele, adding Explore Waterloo Region continues to build on that by creating attractions which combine urban and rural experiences. “We’re putting all kinds of packages together to give people a reason to want to come here.”

 

This includes providing visitors the chance to ‘walk with an alpaca’ courtesy of a local farm near Bright, or the opportunity to go ‘glamping’ in one of the luxury containers at Bingemans. As well, visitors can also canoe down the Grand River this summer topped off by experiencing an authentic Indigenous meal along the journey.

 

Michele says food remains a popular local attraction, noting the creation of a ‘FarmGate’ app that will guide visitors to local farms so they can learn more about where their food comes from, as well as the Farm To Fork television show, hosted by chef Nick Benninger on Bell Fibe TV-1, to promote local cuisine. 

 

Also, wellness-focused excursions have become a growing trend as more Canadians prioritize ways to rejuvenate their body and mind.

 

“We have some great spas in our area, and they all offer great experiences which can all be part of your wellness getaway,” says Michele, adding Waterloo Region’s hundreds of kilometres of hiking and cycling trails also play a role in that trend.

 

Last year, Explore Waterloo Region partnered with Ontario By Bike to create a cycling app that not only highlights various trails and their difficulty levels, but features ‘bike friendly’ businesses along the way, and businesses wishing to be included can apply for certification. 

 

“It’s all about promoting things that you can’t do in Toronto that captures your imagination,” says Michele, referring to local tourism.

 

 

According to the Destination Canada report, Tourism Outlook: Unlocking Opportunities for the Sector, total tourism revenue was poised to exceed 2019 levels. Key report highlights include:

 

  • Demand for travel is projected to grow by 30% by 2030 and will outpace the capacity to host in peak seasons, limiting Canada’s growth potential.
  • The report identifies a $160 billion revenue potential for the tourism industry by 2030, but only if a transformational path is taken that addresses constraints and shifts demand to change how growth occurs.
  • Destination Canada proposes a transformative path to secure an additional $20 billion in annual revenue by 2030, driving real prosperity for tourism businesses across the country and contributing a 14% increase in GDP generated by tourism, 84,000 more jobs and $5.3 billion more in tax revenue for all levels of Government.
  • Industry transformation will close the $20 billion opportunity gap, but it will require sector-wide collaboration on seven key levers: revenue and yield growth, brand leadership, investment, access, workforce and digital readiness, environmental sustainability, and support from Canadians.

The Canadian tourism sector has experienced a brisk recovery since the initial pandemic lockdowns, according to economic experts. But that recovery pace has been easing due to higher interest rates, a slowing job market, and broader cyclical slowdown in the U.S. and abroad. In Ontario, many tourism operators continue to face a great deal of debt caused by the pandemic, prompting many to worry about what the future holds. 

 

Locally, tourism in 2024 is expected to continue to do well, despite the ‘economic crunch’ that may prompt travelers to adjust their plans in the coming year. 

 

We reached out to Explore Waterloo CEO Michele Saran to get her take on what the local tourism sector can expect in the New Year:

 

 

How is local tourism shaping up for 2024, considering the economic realities many people are dealing with?

 

Tourism in Waterloo Region is expected to continue doing well into 2024.  We are beating 2019 pre-pandemic; hotel occupancy numbers and campaigns are driving keen interest in our offerings.  Yes, the economic crunch is impacting everyone and may result in visitors spending a bit less but not completely abandoning all vacation plans.  People consider travel a priority and have been shown to spend less in other discretionary areas to afford some kind of getaway with family and friends. Waterloo Region’s main market is the GTA, and we really lean into the concept of being the perfect road trip destination.  This type of travel can be as budget conscious as one wishes.  There are so many affordable options for fun.

 

 

Are local tourism operators feeling optimistic about what is in store for 2024?

 

The operators I speak with are all quite optimistic about a strong 2024, despite concerns around inflation and its impact on visitor spending.  In addition to leisure travel, we are also seeing incredible interest in the region for meetings, conventions, and sporting events.  The tourism industry is nothing if not resilient. Having come out on the other side of a worldwide pandemic that shut everything down completely, we now have the gift of perspective.  

 

 

What are some of the hurdles do local tourism operators face in the coming year?

 

One of the biggest challenges facing tourism operators everywhere (not just in Waterloo Region) is rebuilding the workforce.  Hospitality workers left the industry during the pandemic, and many did not return.  Industry advocacy organizations are working to address this issue from many angles, from working with government to ease immigration barriers to marketing the industry to students as a career choice. Finding affordable housing is a big hurdle for those in the service sector.  Many of the destinations that are the most popular with visitors are also very expensive places to live.  People want to live in the same area where they work, and this presents another labour-related challenge for the tourism industry as well as many others.

 

Despite optimism for next year’s visitation potential, a very significant issue is the amount of debt tourism businesses incurred during the pandemic just to stay afloat and survive.  According to the Tourism Industry Association of Ontario, 55% of operators say they lack confidence they will be able to repay their debts in two years and 45% risk closure in three years without government intervention.  Thirty-three percent of tourism businesses indicate that they hold more than 250K in outstanding debt. This is a serious issue and one all tourism advocacy organizations continue to push with government for solutions.

 

 

Is talk of the pandemic a thing of the past?

 

I recently returned from the Tourism Industry Association of Canada’s Annual Tourism Congress.  The conversation was around the legacy effects of COVID cited above but I think the entire industry is ready to put the pandemic itself in the rearview mirror and focus on what we do best – welcoming visitors and showing them why our area is fantastic.

The Cambridge Chamber of Commerce handed out the hardware recently recognizing the achievements of the local business community.

 

The awards were presented in front of a sold-out crowd of approximately 360 business leaders and Cambridge/Township of North Dumfries officials at Tapestry Hall on Thursday, May 18.

 

“This event is such an important one for the Chamber because it gives us the opportunity to honour some of the amazing work our local business leaders have accomplished in the last year,” says Cambridge Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Greg Durocher.

 

The Business Excellence Awards is the Chamber’s premier event and has honoured the contributions and achievements of business leaders in the City of Cambridge and Township of North Dumfries since 2000, and features 11 award categories, nine of whom require nominations. In total, nearly 70 nominations were received.

 

Among these awards are Outstanding Workplace, Business of the Year, and New Business Venture of the Year which is aimed at both new and existing businesses.

 

“The awards event itself at Tapestry Hall also provides the perfect setting for business leaders to connect and reconnect, which only strengthens our community,” says Greg.

In 2022 alone, this organization produced 55 Instagram Reels videos that garnered over 353,000 views, plus another 28,000 views on Facebook. This strategy, which resulted in a more than 30% increase in Instagram followers – many of them women – helped further their goal to shine a spotlight on all the great things that our downtown businesses have to offer.

 

 

Spirit of Cambridge award winner: Fibernetics Corporation

 

Helping to create an even better community is very important to the recipient of this award.

Through its unwavering support of several local initiatives, this company is creating a solid foundation for the next generation of residents to succeed and prosper, while at the same time demonstrating extraordinary community leadership. Among its ongoing commitments is a successful partnership with Food4Kids, a program that is near and dear to the hearts of its employees. In the past year alone, it donated just over $12,000 to this organization to assist in its efforts to provide students in more than 20 Cambridge schools with nutritious snacks – driving home the point that no child should go to school hungry. This past December, this company even matched its employees’ fundraising efforts dollar to dollar and donated more than $4,300 to the cause. It also supports a secondary initiative created by one of its own employees called Coffee4Kids to further benefit Food4Kids. Also, as well as sponsoring youth sports teams, this company also provides two days of paid volunteer leave to ensure its employees have ample chance to give back to their community, which makes it clear the spirit of giving is a priority to this organization.

 

 

Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award: Eric Johnson of Vitality Village Osteopathy and Wellness

 

A commitment to overall health and wellbeing, and community, are driving forces that continue to lead the recipient of this award to great success. An opportunity to volunteer with a falls prevention and stroke rehab program as an undergrad at university started this recipient on the path to entrepreneurship which later would result in Eric opening his own successful business in downtown Hespeler. Utilizing business in relation to his many skills – including founding his own landscaping business which he maintained until August of 2022 - has been a passion and has led him to achieve great success in a short time. According to many of his loyal clients, he is constantly trying to do better for his community and is proud his business gives people the opportunity to connect and find commonalities in hobbies, health, and goals. He and the team of health experts he has assembled under one roof provides the perfect setting for his clients to foster those connections.

 

 

New Venture of the Year award winner: Java Jax Good Roast Coffee Inc.

 

The recipient of this award is a great example of what a small business owner can achieve through passion and good old-fashioned hard work. After navigating through the litany of startup requirements so many new businesses face, not to mention undertaking a major construction project during a pandemic, this new business managed to bring its plan to fruition in a relatively short time. Creating a bright and comfortable setting – perfect for private dining or a quiet place to do some work – has helped this family-run business achieve steady success since opening its door in the fall of 2022. In that time, it has become a ‘go-to’ spot for many loyal customers by ensuring service remains its No. 1 priority and has done this by making a point of getting to know their clients not just by name, but by also by remembering their favourite dishes and drinks, and by adjusting its menu to reflect their requests and dietary needs. The growing number of its glowing Google reviews and Instagram followers are clear indicators the owners are on the right path as they continue to hone and enhance their business model, which featured special drink offers that were included in the ‘welcome baskets’ presented to new residents of the neighbouring condos in the Gaslight District – reaching more than 800 residents.

WoW Cambridge award winner: Homewood Suites by Hilton Cambridge/Waterloo

 

Providing good old-fashioned hospitality, not to mention a haven for people in need, made this local company stand out in 2022. Welcoming dozens of families that arrived in Waterloo Region as Government Sponsored Refugees, the employees of this organization left a lasting impression on a group of people looking for a new start, including many displaced by the war in the Ukraine, by treating them with kindness and respect. In turn, this has prompted many of these refugees to make Cambridge their permanent home. The employees accomplished this great feat by leading with their hearts and not any unconscious biases. It wasn’t always an easy task, especially when faced with outright racism against new Canadians from a small but vocal minority of people who took it upon themselves to criticize their efforts.  But they didn’t let this negativity deter them from helping others, so much so, their ramped-up service efforts went on to garner them a globally recognized travel award from Trip Advisor.

 

 

WoW Cambridge award winner: Jeff and Angie of Sun Variety

 

The continued kindness shown by the recipients of this award has made a lasting impression on many of the customers who visited their variety store. But it was one good deed that stood out and didn’t go unnoticed in the community that set them apart. It involved a long-time customer who was having mobility issues. Realizing he was having an issue, out of general concern, the recipients of this award took it upon themselves to purchase him a four-pronged cane which immediately improved the quality of his life and enabled him to return to their store.

 

 

Chair’s Award: Graham Mathew Chartered Professional Accountants

 

The recipient of this award has continued to be a valuable community partner to countless organizations since it first went into business more than 50 years ago. This is a company that values the importance of creating an economically strong, healthy, and vibrant community, and knows that giving back is key to make that happen. They always walk the talk which is why they are the true definition of a good corporate citizen. Among their many achievements is ongoing support to the Cambridge Memorial Hospital Foundation and since 1995 have donated approximately $130,000 to this worthy cause, as well as sponsoring CMH events to ensure we have the best equipped hospital possible. In fact, they played a pivotal role in the WeCareCMH Campaign in 2017, which raised more than $10 million towards the purchase of vital equipment. But their support doesn’t just include the community’s physical health but extends to its cultural health also which is why this company has been a been a big financial supporter of Drayton Entertainment since the Hamilton Family Theatre Cambridge first opened its doors in 2013.

As well, this award recipient also continues to do its best to ensure our community’s most vulnerable are not forgotten and is an ongoing champion of the Cambridge Shelter Corporation in its work to help those in need, not only sponsoring the region-wide Hockey Helps the Homeless fundraiser but by providing this organization with expert accounting assistance.

However, these are just a handful of the organizations and causes this company quietly supports behind the scenes. Others include, to name just a few, the Cambridge Food Bank, United Way Waterloo Region Communities, Porchlight Counselling & Addiction Services, Food4Kids, and YMCA Three Rivers. This award is all about going above and beyond, which is something this company does nearly daily and for that, as a community, we couldn’t be more thankful.

 

 

Community Impact Award: Terry Kratz of HFK MacRae & Wilson LLP

 

Community and prosperity are two words that clearly mean a great deal to the recipient of this prestigious award. Born and raised in Waterloo Region, Terry Kratz has seamlessly blended his knack for numbers with his passion for volunteering by continually assisting various initiatives and organizations that help make our community an even better place to work, live and play. Throughout his very successful accounting career, which has included a partnership for more than a decade at Ernst & Young, our award recipient has always been willing to step up to assist organizations and causes in need.

The quiet, steadfast, and realistic approach he uses in his professional career has been a huge benefit to the many groups who are fortunate to have him in their corner. From his past involvement with the Grand River Film Festival, Cambridge Community Foundation, and Cambridge Library & Gallery, to his current work with the Cambridge Symphony Orchestra, his commitment to ensuring these organizations and others like them flourish has never wavered.  So, it’s no surprise he is often the first person to step up to lend a hand. He also remains driven to ensure our community succeeds economically. In the 1990s he played a pivotal role in the creation of the city’s much talked about strategic plan called ‘Our Common Future’, as well Chaired the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors. In fact, his relationship with the Chamber has continued as Board Treasurer for the last 20 years allowing him to work very closely with its key officials in their efforts to assist our city’s business community grow and prosper. Also, his love of exploring new lands has made him an integral part of making our Travel Program a success, leading dozens of adventure seekers to exotic locations worldwide. He is a true community champion who never stops making an impact.

Excitement is building for Business Expo 2023.

 

This popular trade show, which hasn’t been held since 2019, returns to Bingemans on May 10 and will feature more than 200 exhibitors and at least 1,500 attendees from throughout Cambridge, Kitchener-Waterloo, and Guelph.

 

“This has always been a great opportunity for local businesses to not only showcase what they do but meet and network with other business leaders,” says Cambridge Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Greg Durocher. “It also will provide job hunters, entrepreneurs and businesses the chance to make professional connections.”

 

Business Expo 2023, co-sponsored by the Cambridge, Kitchener-Waterloo, and Guelph Chambers of Commerce, is free for the public to attend and will also feature many local food and beverage vendors. It runs from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., providing ample time to check out the displays.

 

“All three Chambers are pleased to have the chance once again to be able to work together on this event which gives attendees the opportunity to really learn about some of the great local businesses we have,” says Greg.

 

For businesses taking part in the trade show, he says the quality of their displays can make or break the experience for them.

 

“Exhibitors new to trade shows tend to focus on the flashy; they want to create displays that will draw crowds,” he says. “But that’s not the point. It’s not the number of people your display draws that matters; it’s whether or not your exhibit engages them when they’re there.”

 

To maximize your networking at Business Expo 2023, here are a few tips:

 

  • Neatness and visibility - Keep your display neatly organized and clearly mark all your prices.
  • Build Demand - Spark customers’ interest by placing a sold sign on a few items, or by leaving a display spot empty.
  • Be Interactive - Contests, prizes, demonstrations, games, and quizzes will generate interest in your display.
  • Offer Takeaways - Provide visitors with a small item they can take home with them.
  • Clear Signage - Ensure basic information and prices are clearly visible for visitors.
  • Literature - Stock up on brochures and fliers, as well as price sheets and business cards.
  • Be Business Ready - Make sure you have pens and order forms ready to process potential sales.
  • Engage With Visitors - A friendly welcome and the proper body language can go a long way.
  • Always Be Open - Ensure your booth is never left empty.
  • Follow Up Promptly - The faster you send out emails or make a call the better it is for your business.

It has been a tumultuous time for businesses since COVID-19 surfaced nearly two years ago, which is why the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce is encouraging business leaders to celebrate themselves at our annual Business Excellence Awards.

 

“It’s not only time to celebrate the achievements of businesses, but also to celebrate all the people who have endured the last couple of years,” says Cambridge Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Greg Durocher. “It’s time to raise our glasses to the very people and businesses that have given us all the opportunities we have in our community.”

 

The Business Excellence Awards is the Chamber’s premier event and has honoured the contributions and achievements of business leaders in the City of Cambridge and Township of North Dumfries since 2000, and features 11 award categories, eight of whom require nominations.

 

“We all know somebody in business who has done something generally remarkable during COVID-19,” says Greg, adding this may go beyond the concept of ‘pivoting’. “Maybe they have created a whole new line of products related to PPE? Or maybe they became very innovative in the way they operate due to staff changes or shortages?”

 

Also, he says there may be businesses out there that have successfully enhanced their workplace culture at a time when employees have had to distance themselves via Zoom or Microsoft Teams.

 

“Despite that, perhaps there are businesses that have found ways to bring their employees even closer together?”

 

As well, Greg says there are businesses that should be recognized because they have found ways to help the community, even during this tough time.

 

“There are many companies who have been successful through the pandemic but made a difference in the community by being generous with their profits and helping others who have been unable to help themselves whether this storm.”

 

He also encourages businesses to nominate themselves.

 

“It’s not a bad thing to nominate yourself because there may be others who don’t know or understand what you did, or the stress or strain you went through during this time,” says Greg. “These are stories that need to be told.”

 

He says the awards are a great way for the Cambridge business community to celebrate its hard work and efforts.


“We are an innovative and aggressive business community. We are a passionate business community, which makes us very busy every day,” says Greg. “But we can take a couple of minutes out of our day to look around at our peers and nominate them because we’ve all done something important and unique and special during the last two years.”
