A Conversation with Women about Work. Life. Confidence.
The Cambridge Chamber of Commerce is celebrating the achievements of the growing number of talented women who play an integral role in the business community and at the same time provide much-needed support to our local hospital and restaurants.
The Chamber’s annual ‘Salute to Women in Business’ Luncheon will be held virtually due to COVID-19 on Jan. 27, 2021 and is shaping up to be an unforgettable event to acknowledge the important contributions of women business leaders and innovators.
This year’s theme - ‘Conversations with Women on Work. Life. Confidence’ - will centre on an informative discussion with three women we are confident our attendees will find inspiring.
Samra Zafar
Human Rights Activist | Social Entrepreneur | Bestselling Author
A
fter escaping a decade of abuse living as a child bride in a forced marriage in Canada, Samra Zafar became a beacon of hope for many people facing exclusion, abuse, and gender-based violence. Now an award-winning international speaker, bestselling author, scholar, and social entrepreneur, she engages audiences around the world speaking about collective resilience, authentic leadership, inclusive workplaces, youth, human rights, mental health, and more.
In 2017, Zafar wrote an article about her personal experience with abuse for Toronto Life, which became a most-read article in Canada. In the same year, she delivered a TEDx talk, which was named an all-time top 10 talk on gender-based violence. Since then, she has given three TEDx talks and delivered keynotes for several organizations, including Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada, UNICEF, Yale University, Amnesty International, Art of Leadership, and many leading non-profits, corporations, and universities around the world.
In 2019, Zafar published her first book, A Good Wife: Escaping the Life I Never Chose, which instantly became a national bestseller and named one of CBC's Best Books of 2019 for Canadian Non-fiction. It is now being adapted into a TV series and published internationally. Zafar’s work has also been featured in global media outlets, including Washington Post, Huffington Post, National Post, CBC, The Globe and Mail, CBC, CTV, and Yahoo.
Zafar has been recognized as one of Canada’s “Top 100 Most Powerful Women” by Women’s Executive Network, and a “Top 25 Canadian Immigrant” by RBC. She is also a celebrated ambassador for Plan International Canada and a board member for Women’s College Hospital Foundation.
A graduate of the University of Toronto with a master’s degree in economics, Zafar earned the highest distinction and more than a dozen awards and scholarships. Today, she is one of the youngest alumni serving as a governor for the University of Toronto.
Melissa + Julia
We believe that every woman building a business should know exactly what to say and where to say it. We are Melissa + Julia, Brand & Social Media Coaches who support women building small businesses to confidently communicate with their audience through VIP client work, group programming, and online courses.
Founded in 2018, we came together to bring the best of our talents; Melissa's ability to set people at ease and ask them all the right questions needed to craft the perfect positioning, and Julia's ability to see how design fits with strategy. We started off as BFFs way back in grade 3, and now as adults we work side-by-side 150km apart daily doing something we love.
Colleen James
Colleen is passionate about helping others learn. A professor at Conestoga College in
the School of Business, she challenges her students to discover the leader within and
that learning is a lifelong journey. Having more than fifteen years of experience
promoting inclusive environments in the public, private and non-profit sectors, Colleen
has blended her passions of education and diversity understanding to provide training to
organizations. In 2015 she started Divonify Inc, local equity and inclusion consulting
agency. Her primary area of practice focuses on using real-life situations to diffuse
uncomfortable conversations surrounding race, ethnicity and gender, enabling to
thought-provoking discussions that challenge assumptions. These conversations lead to
a deeper understanding of the impacts of systemic racism, power, privilege and the ability to see through multiple lenses. The result is the creation of meaningful discussions, and necessary tools to help generate new EDI frameworks that address anti-racism, equity and diversity.
Colleen has completed training in leadership and inclusion, holds degrees from the University of Toronto, is a graduate from Leadership Waterloo Region and is currently completing her Master of Education in Educational Leadership and Policy at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE). Colleen participates on several committees and collaborative projects, including the Mayor’s Task Force on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and is a recipient of the Leading Women, Leading Girls – Building Communities award. Most recently Colleen was named one of the Top 100 Black Women to Watch in Canada by the CIBWE.
